I used to play the hell out of JPRGs, from SNES through early PS1 days. Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Grandia. I devoured those games in my early and mid teens.
Then I... stopped playing them, entirely. And hated them. There's very little *there* there. There's not enough tactics like a grid based SRPG, and I just don't care about the psudo anime bullshit.
For some reason, though, I've sunk about 40 hours into FFXII and I fully intend on finishing the game and I'm giong to try to do all of the hunts, save the 50,000,000 HP boss.
For those who are unaware, the game plays very similarly to an MMORPG. The monsters are all on the field, you can (mostly) avoid them if you wish. You have a party of 3 and while you CAN take direct control of any of the characters and manually input commands just like the older Finals Fantasy, the game uses something called the gambit system.
Essentially you can program every party member with an if > then chain of commands
So my healer is set up such that
If ally KO = Cast Raise
If ally less than 60% HP = Cast Cura
If ally poison = Cast Poisona
etc etc etc and then the last thing they do is attack the lowest HP enemy, so my white mage does white mage things as long as it's needed, then smacks stuff with her mace when everyone's healthy.
If you set it up properly the game almost plays itself, and while this might seem like a terrible thing, when it comes down to it, for me the worst part of JRPGs is random battles where in I have to individually select and spam the same magics, the same attacks, over and over and over, this just takes care of it for you. And you can have your black mage attack fire weak enemies with fire spells, etc.
Since you have 6 party members, three of which are active at any given time, and you can swap them on the fly, In a sense, the real game is figuring out how to best program your party for a given encounter.
It's not for everybody, but it's scratching an itch for me right now.

But I'll be damned if I didn't go right back to DOOM.
I declare it the best FPS ever made.

Though not my favorite, it is a close second, so I began to wax nostalgic about it. Then I remembered that when one of my computers died last year, I had the hard drive installed in the new used computer that I bought. So I didn't need to mess around with installation or trying to make a Steam patch work on a non-Steam installation. Sure enough, the game booted up nicely and I started with a fresh character. The game runs on the same engine as Half-Life two, and it looks even better on Windows 10. The tutorial at the beginning game is excellent and enjoyable, so it was easy to get back in the swing of things. Although I'm not looking forward to the repetitive combats in the final stretch of the game, it's worth replaying because every clan requires a different approach to the gameplay. My current character is Tremere, which emphasizes short-range mental and mystical attacks, which is not really my style. I might start over soon and try out either Brujah (supernatural strength+speed) or Nosferatu (supernatural strength and mandatory stealth).

Tonight I loaded up Quake Champions for the first time in a long time. I got brutalized, but that game is pretty good. Also did another level in Devil May Cry. I am surprised at how much I like that game.

It's certainly a great one. I think I'd have to give that title to Unreal Tournament 99 though.

If it's just ANY FPS, including RPG's, Fallout 3 is it.

Best of all time would include Metroid Prime, Halo, Half Life 2, Bioshock and Goldeneye. I think most consider it to be Metroid Prime but i'd have to give it to Halo. I agree with Pete that the inclusion of vehicles, like Half Life 2, really pushes it ahead
