Another might be allowing prior racial powers to carry over into future generations. If Orcs give a plus to attack, then your next generation civ gets a smaller plus to attack due to orc ancestry. A race of Half-Dwarf Half-Orc Skeletons battling a race of Elf-cyborgs that are descended from dragons.

DoW will never offer something up with that much awesome packed into it. Mostly because it would add complexity to the game, and every moderate complexity game DoW has tried they have screwed up. If anything, they will do the opposite and dumb down Vinci.
The artwork is already pointing that direction.

A fantasy version of civilisation would be awesome. Players could choose to have their race stick to their culture and strengthen their magic throughout the ages while others could embrace technology which comes at a cost of distancing yourself from the Gods (and thus losing your magic.) Or you could try and split the tree for both.

You could have things like 'dragon raids' where dragons randomly raid your lands throughout the game destroying your shit. You have to build up defences against them, but if your too successfull (inventing nukes to take them out for example) then dragons will become extinct and races will no longer be able to use them.

There's your mandate Frank...get busy on it. I'd play it.

Would Octavian's name have to be on the box cover as co-designer though? He planted the seed of the idea, and I don't want an age of steam style fiasco keeping me out of the top 500 on TOS.

I'm going to start stockpiling game ideas now so I'll have parody titles ready.

That's an interesting point. Vinci is definitely a great core of a game. If they juiced it up - flesh out the game and add more flavor than just retheme-ing ...

They could just offer it up as an advanced variant...

The juiced up, fleshed out, advanced variant is called "History of the World."

HotW does have monuments and cities to help change the map a bit, though it is quite constrained as the cities are in a predetermined place and the monuments have limited options. And there are no racial/civ abilities (other than how many dudes you get and if you can travel by sea), and especially not any the carry over from age to age. The major/minor event cards don't count.

Ryan, will the wounds ever heal?

Well boys, tonight I was at the Superbowl with corporate tickets for the NFL Experience. (I live in Tampa.) So I spent my evening hobnobbing with Eric Dickerson Vinny Testaverde, Marcus Allen, Rocket Ismail, Thurman Thomas & Warren Moon. They were all there for some celebrity Telemundo flag football game. Evidentially, you will be able to see me on TV too. (LOL)

Hey, I even got Martin Grammatica to actually call and speak to my wife!

So yea, boys, football players heal all wounds. : )

BTW, How's dat for some name-droppin at ya! (LOL) Sorry guys, just a little excited tonight that's all. Plus they have contests at the NFL experience where you get to simulate doing various pro football activities.

My claim to fame for the evening was zipping three perfectly thrown balls right down central to the simulated receiving targets. I actually got some applause for that one!

So yea, you'll all have to forgive me... cause I am JACKED up!!!!!

AWESOME evening.

(Much better than playing Dale Yu's simulated football boardgames. See his BGN article.)

Ryan, this thread is about your unnatural hatred for orcs and orc-kin. Not football. Don't dodge the question. We're trying to make a breakthrough here!

Actually History of the World feels a little different than Vinci, in some ways (dice) more interesting, and in some ways (no special powers for empires) drier.

I was thinking of a more interesting Vinci as pulling in elements of Evo. The chance for empires to gain a new power over time, or an event deck.

HA! Actually Ryan has spread his infection to Eric Martin of Boardgamenews. Eric expressed his hatred for fantasy themes in his review of "Wizard's Gambit"
