Unfortunately one of the same issues as H&R in that because I have an HSA forced on me by insurance plan that I don't qualify for free. I guess I just have to pay.

www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free
TurboTax and some other vendors lost a court case about hiding all their federally mandated free material. If they want to be able to transmit to the IRS, they need to provide free returns for these income levels, but they BURY it on their websites and make it a real pain-in-the-ass. They were sued and lost in federal court, so it's not as obscured. Now they try to obscure with even more "free" offerings that have conditions and other limits that indicate they aren't actually free, oh well.

Maryland charges $20 to file electronically regardless, so my tax returns to the state for me and my kids went the old fashioned way.

Shit is wrong. Federal they already have the ability to give you a full one to double check, like lots of european countries do. There's a whole propublica fight about all this if you want to read about how dirty this industry is and their ability to take even a tiny public good that would make your life easier away from you.

Calculating them can be a hassle, of course, which is how you end up with turbotax or one of those fuckers. Did mine in turbotax this year and cost real money but my hours are more important these days than the extra 50 bucks or whatever.

For the last five years I’ve done a federal and two state returns. Being able to do it all at once and the time it saves makes the fee somewhat tolerable. The irritating part is that less than 1% of the income takes 50% of the time to force into TurboTax so that it doesn’t error out.

Look guys, everyone everywhere keeps saying you can do taxes free online so I was checking if that was even possible for me. Apparently I'm just being cheap and shouldn't have asked. Sorry I wasted everyone's time. It wasn't a big deal and I didn't mean to imply it was.
