Fuck. This has come as a bit of a shock-http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/mar/27/diana-wynne-jones-obituary It shouldn't do really, considering her age and battle with cancer, but this is a writer I can't ever remember not being into. I was reading her from the point I was able to read.
Which you could do with her. Not only was she prolific, her books are aimed at an extremely diverse age range. Frankly, her "juveniles" are still a hell of a better read than much "adult" fantasy and scifi out there.
She was an author's author as well. Both Pratchett and Gaiman were big fans. And Harry Potter was 'influenced' by Wynne Jones in much the same way that Elastica were 'influenced' by Wire.
At the end of the day, I fully accept that only a tiny percentage of fantasy fans are going to even notice that Wynne Jones is no longer with us. But for those of us who do, the world is just a little bit less magical than it was on Friday.
(With apologies to Carter USM)
And the world carries on without Diana,
It's not a worse or a better place,
Uglier and safer maybe.
But that's a question of personal taste.
