Unlikely Cinematic Badasses

I'm ripping this topic from AVClub.com but I think it's a good one.

The criteria: an actor known for a certain role or character type that does a 180 in a film to reveal their badassness.

Their list: Dustin Hoffman in "Straw Dogs" (yep!), Sigourney Weaver in Aliens (really?) and Henry Fonda in "Once Upon A Time In The West" (haven't seen it)

My pick(s): Henry Fonda (There Was A Crooked Man) & Linda Hamilton (T:2)

Adrian Brody was a very questionable choice to play a tough mercenary in Predators. He's a good actor, though, so he eventually sold me on the idea.

Barring things like DARK CITY that no one except us watched, I think most everyone was caught off guard by Liam Neeson in TAKEN. He just stomps balls in that film. And he's parlayed that into a career now with UNKNOWN and what not.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST beats CROOKED MAN by two years for Henry Fonda.

How about Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast. He may have played a bad guy before, but not on that level.

Tony Curtis playing Jack the Ripper was pretty messed up.

Robin Williams in Insomnia really took me by surprise. He tried it again in One Hour Photo but it didn't work as well.

I read an article once saying that Vin Diesel had been born in the wrong age if he was stuck doing B movies like Babylon AD while James McAvoy got to do Wanted with Jolly Angelina.

John Cusack- Grosse Pointe Blank

Tim Robbins- Arlington Road

Anthony Hopkins- The Edge (yes Hopkins always has a certain gravitas about his roles- but in the Edge HE KILLS A BEAR WITH A STICK). One of my all time favorite movies.

Tom Petty- The Postman :)

Liam Neeson in Taken is a good one! Though wasn't he in Rob Roy as a badass? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Yes. That's one of the best badass movies by the way.

Sorry -- Boston Strangler. I always mix those two names up.

He was in it but Tim Roth stole the movie.

Liam Neeson was also a Jedi and Ra's al Ghul. There's no unlikely about it. The man's just a badass.
