What MOVIE(s) have you been....seeing? watching?
The opening and the credits scene were phenomenal though. I'm not a big Edgar Wright fan and this was by far my favorite film of his. Enjoyed how it was much more serious than his other work.

I watched this over the weekend as well. So brutal. Just by chance I happened to split it up into two viewings, an hour apiece. It was like watching two completely different movies. I actually love how Korean cinema is not afraid to mix many different moods in a single film (Bong Joo Ho's earlier movie The Host is a perfect example), but here it jarred me. I mean, the premise set out at the beginning makes it inevitable that it will go to some dark places, but even knowing that, it was painful. This is the kind of film that could scar children for life (not necessarily a bad thing, a la Bambi or Old Yeller).the_jake_1973 wrote: Okja. Saw it on Netflix and really enjoyed it. A story about a girl and her super-pig and her quest to get it back from the food conglomerate that designed it.
So, my final assessment: very well made, beautiful effects, I'm glad I saw it; but, not sure I enjoyed it, would be difficult to recommend.

I'm completely burnt out on superhero movies. I still haven't even seen Wonder Woman which sounds like it's fantastic on several levels.
I did put up a disclaimer after Logan that I don't see what superhero movies can offer me after that one. I'm going to want to feel something now when I see these things. Logan spoiled me far too much I think.
On my side, I really want to first see Baby Driver, The Big Sick and that movie about the street cats in Istanbul which is supposed to be insane.
Emily is off on vacation with her mom and the timing couldn't be better cuz I probably would have brought her to see Despicable Me 3 which i'm sure would have been even more meh than the trailer for the Emoji Movie (I NEVER want to sit through that again)

They aren't talking about the Stephanie Meyer movie.

Nah, Barney actually loved the Korean Host. So suprised over and over in that movie. I bet Barnes HATES it cuz it has a young Asian girl in it.

I had almost no interest in seeing the new Spidey flick, but I quite enjoyed it. That kid is really likable as Peter Parker, and his best friend and this snarky girl from his school are both great, too. The early scenes with Peter as an eager and impatient superhero are really fun, and I also loved a scene later on where Peter has a surprise confrontation with someone, and the ending makes for a better sequel setup than I expected. It's pretty funny throughout, with some fun details mixed in, as well as a recurring Avenger cameo that worked well (including the final stinger). I didn't like some of the high school interactions, which sometimes felt forced or unreal, and there's a big aspect of this involving his suit that made it less of a Spiderman thing and more of a... well, other superhero thing. But on the whole, it's a winner.

The slaughterhouse scenes and the scenes where the corporation are handling the super-pig are rough. Rougher than anything from Bambi and Old Yeller. The movie is certainly unflinching in its gaze on commercial meat production. It was a well done bit of commentary about the spin surrounding buying Okja.

I love the horror genre, warts and all. I also love any sort of cryptozoology "documentary."
Positive: The Void. Indy Canadian Horror. It's a mash-up of Carpenter's 'Apocalypse Trilogy' with surprisingly good practical effects. Very wet.
Negative: ExtraOrdinary - The Stan Romanek Documentary. Indy Documentary about a Colorado resident and his decades of alien abduction. It's a fascinating tripe & bullshit salad, and I find it genuinely curious from a sociological point of reference. I don't know if these people are deliberate charlatans, mentally unhinged, or both. Unfortunately, at the film's end - you learn that (spoiler/not spoiler) the titular man is charged with child pornography. Indirectly, my viewing of this crap has supported his legal defense.
