I thought it was just at the start of the war phase, and then your money goes behind the screen.

No, it's always public except for the moment of bidding.

I've played a couple of games of ESCAPE THE DARK CASTLE with the kids. It's very simple. You flip a card and then have an encounter. Sometimes you make a choice, other times you just fight by rolling a dice and then getting hurt if the enemy isn't killed. It's not pretty, but it's so very gorgeous with big cards and spooky black and white artwork. Mechanically it's not all that interesting, but I do like how you have to decide which one of you (it's a coop, should have mentioned that) enters a room first since it often has dire consequences.

I like it ... somewhat. To be honest I'm not that impressed with the story, and it feels a bit grindy. It probably has the same amount of choices as DUNGEONQUEST, but at least the risk of insta-death makes DQ a bit more exciting. Will play it more and report back.

Also got in a game of CASTLE PANIC with the five year old. It seems like the right amount of complexity and we had fun. But even though the game looks good, it was somewhat repetitive, and the dramaturgy was a bit off in our game. We had almost won, and then we suddenly lost. Need to try it with more players, but it is definitely not a game I will ever play solo or with my gamer friends.

I picked up a copy of Innovation a while ago from someone on Facebook (for seven bucks) to replace my copy that disappeared in Doha or beforehand. I realized recently that it's the third edition. My wife and oldest daughter are in L.A. so my son and daughter were up for a game. We learned the rules as we went, and my daughter (13) got a little bored as she was having trouble scoring, but then she got some hot cards and as we entered the later stages everything started accelerating. I had a nice, brutal card stolen from me, and then my son (18) did some kind of three card combo and started collecting point cards like they were AOL floppies and it was 1989. I think it was something like 5-2-3. He did the victory dance and we all talked about the game for a while, and they want to play again. Then they made me watch another episode of Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

What BOARD GAME(s) have you been playing? 22 Feb 2018 16:19 #263846

Lots of Snow this past weekend, so some x-wing shenanigans. We've been playing the Rebel Transport "Evacuation of Hotch" campaign, I've had the imperials. kinda just dropped it on me last weekend, so I ran just a random 3 ship list against his transport + Buddies for Mission 1. The hoth 'campaign' has most of the same rebel list, with some reinforcements, going through 3 missions, with some bonuses to whomever won each of the three. also the transport carries some damage from mission to mission. The imperials on the other hand, cannot use unique pilots in more than one mission.

Mission 1 has the GR-75 + 125 points of ships vs my 100 pts of imperial ships. The imperials lost, mostly due to my defender getting run over by the transport. Eventually I had the inquisitor sitting on the rear end of the transport, attacking constantly. at speed 1 the transport can generate 3 energy, and regen 3 shields. Inquisitor only ever rolls 3 dice, so we were at a net-zero equation. Still, this mission has space-mines, and they are a cool change to the way you play.

Still, I had fun, so this past weekend we decided to brave the snow and try some more.

Mission 2 has the Transport + 140 pts, vs the imperial 200 pts. 200 pts that come in piecemeal, and have to kill the transport in 8 rounds. and they trickle those reinforcements in, with 50sih points coming in at the end of round 6, and the last 25-35 pts in at the end of round 7....meaning 1 round of shooting for that last ship.

I've always kinda blown off the z-95, but my friend takes one nearly every mission...and nearly every mission that little ship gets its missle off, and just screws me up somewhere. this time it was LT Blount, custom built to blow the stealth device off of Soontir Fel. Also present, Y-wing (Dutch), x-wings, B-wing, and a U-wing. Never played with/against a U-Wing. it gets some crap online, but its basically a rebel Lambda Shuttle, with the ability to spin around in spot. I still love my lambda, so I was impressed.

I started with some Tie Fighters, and a Omega Leader, who is fun shenanigans, but doesn't put a ton of damage out by himself. Basic TIEs melted before the first wave of reinforcements showed up. Which were more TIEs and a PS 2 TIE Advanced (with Accuracy Corrector). These three TIEs lasted much longer. That little Advanced with AC is a great ship. Soontir showed up afterwards, and was promptly stressed to death by Blount.

At this point I had lost 3 or 4 ships, and my only kill was his transport running over his Rookie X-wing. Overall, things were looking poor for the Imperials. Lucky for me, the transport had flown directly into the path of my last two reinforcement groups. One of which were two TIE Bombers with Advance Proton Torpedoes. Remember, they only get two rounds to fly and shoot in. so first(7) round they take a Target Lock on the Transport, 2nd(8) round Focus and get into range one.

Last reinforcement arrives, Its Darth Vader riding in the Lambda Shuttle! The transport Runs one of the two bombers over. Other Bomber shoots his Torpedo, some other gets a couple pot shots off and ping the transport. Lambda Fires, and Darth Vader chokes out the last hull point off the transport. Victory!

Mission 2 is difficult, as their are a decent number of restrictions on how many points you need to put in each reinforcement group(Doom shuttle is 24 points, so I had to find 1 pt extra, same with bombers.....44 points, need 45). But it also has these turbolaser and ion cannon tokens, representing the blockading fleet and the ground based ion cannon on hoth. these are fun, and its neat to see all the ship veering wildly away from where they are going to hit in the next turn.

Mission 3 has the transport assign 'roles' to his escort. giving them additional attack dice, or the ability to generate extra energy for the transport, or have the transport do extra actions, all within range 1-2 of the transport. The imperials get the ability to "surround" the transport, with each ship within range 1 denying the transport a move-option on its movement dial. surround it enough, and the imperial player picks the move dial.

Countess Ryad (Defender), Krassis Trelix (Firespray), Lt Colzet (TIE Advanced) and a basic TIE advanced with Accuracy Corrector.

Ryad is a freaking beast. I had push the limit, Engine Mk II, Tie/X7. So she'd take a 3/4/5 Kturn, shed stress, then Evade, Target Lock, Focus and pour 3-4 dice into the transport.
Still, I didn't kill the transport. He made the mistake of flying it close to one side of the board. So I was able to surround and and limit his move choices enough that he had to fly off. which is kind of an anti-climatic way for a series of missions about....flying away to end.

I'll re-post my quality instead of quantity post, been missing out my visits to my midweek euro group as they have been doing lots of Scythe and Terraforming Mars and my patience and love of mathematics aren't up to those so it's just been my Sunday sessions for the last month or so - a pictorial record courtesy of BGG:

Last time it was noticed I was (apparently) still playing Middle Earth Quest in 2018 - well my records show I've played it 14 times since Dec 2012, it's one of our 3-player go to games with a mechanic - your card deck being used for travel, combat and life - that is one of my favourites in any game I've played.
