Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.
Return of zombies to Hollywood?
With Planet Terror also released last year (regrettably to a smaller audience), is there a revival of the zombie movie in the mainstream?

But Ken, if this is a major box office hit (and not sold as a zombie movie, to the surprise of many viewers around me), how is it mot mainstream?

Having a project like this can only raise the stakes for future zombie films, though. But no "casual viewers" I know have even referred to it as a zombie movie...they thought of it as a "vampire" movie.
Either way, yeah, it's a good time to be a fan of zombie films and genre films in general.

As in the classification of monsters: one or a few superhuman monsters with an achilles heel (Frankenstein, Godzilla, King Kong, Predator, War of the World, alien (1 & 3) vs masses of subhuman monsters (zombies, aliens).

And another thing...CGI zombies have got to go...one of the main things that makes older zombie pictures so great (and even 28 DAYS LATER for that matter) is that they're _gritty_, not glossy, and the effects are all practical- makeup and craftsmanship over stupid fucking PS3 graphics that flippity flop around the screen. Watch ZOMBI or even DELLAMORE DELLAMORTE for zombie pictures with some teeth.

And what the fuck was up with that five minute long SHREK commercial in it? And why does the lady at the end come driving up in the new 2008 Ford Explorer when it's supposed to be 2012 or whatever? Oh yeah, because it's fucking crass-ass Hollywood commercialism at its absolute worst- a movie that aims for the "spiritual" but gets the biggest audience response out of a pile of useless money in the bank scene.

I mean in the book its cool because he's just a regular guy with his own shattered hopes and dreams lost in a horrific apocalypse. In the movie he's a world class scientist, military and nationally renowned hero who has hightech secret lab trying to find a cure to save the human race....that is stupid and boring and elitist. In the book its a guy who spends his days hunting down the undead, basically for revenge and his own amusement. Thats all you need, thats cool; you don't need all that other crap.
OK, that had to be said. On to zombies....
Zombies are indeed enjoying a rennaissance that has been unparalleled in horror movie history. The past 5 to 6 years have seen a huge upswing in not only the number and quality of zombie movies but also generally their overall acceptance into mainstream society. What I mean by this is I think this is more than just a fad; zombies have now become an integral part in the horror lexicon and history, standing on their own right beside the classic horror figures such as Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster.
Pirates are in vogue now too. All we need now is for Ninjas to make a comeback.

I AM LEGEND is a very elitist, bourgeosie movie and as such it speaks to those values...which I fucking hate. It's all about "stuff"...capitalist junk with this goofy left-wing "spiritual" baloney tacked on in the last act.
It's weird seeing zombies so popular...I remember growing up in the 80s and zombie movies were just the absolute shit, hardcore horror for hardcore fans and beyond NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, they weren't a mainstream phenom at all. Now everybody's aware of them, they're sanitized and cleaned up for primetime.
It's pretty sad though, that I'd rather watch the absolutely pathetic, idiotic, and incredibly amateurish HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD over a multimillion dollar hollywood project. At least that movie is honest about what it is and what it isn't.

as a long time gore-hound I'm amazed by how just about any amount of violence is allowed in movies these days
Considering the number of humans Smiths gets to kill in I am Legend, it is amazing it goes unrated. If on the other hand, he would have made a suggestive remark to the doll in the video store, it would probably have been 16+
