Funny story...Fulci always claimed that ZOMBI 2 was influenced more by I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE than DAWN OF THE DEAD...and you know, despite the eyeball scene and the shark versus zombie throwdown, he's kind of got a point...

Yes, I worship Val Lewton...you really owe it to yourself as a fan of horror to check out the films he did at RKO- they were _all_ great, very ahead of their time and still the best example of how low budget horror doesn't have to resign itself to cheap shocks and exploitation (not that there's anything wrong with that). The films he did with Jacques Tourneur in particular (CAT PEOPLE, CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE, I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, and LEOPARD MAN) are astonishing...Robert Wise (who went on to do THE HAUNTING, WEST SIDE STORY, and THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL) worked with Lewton as well and did some really nice work. The Lewton box set is one of my "rescue from fire" items- it's magnificent, the films are immortal, timeless, and among the best pieces of horror filmmaking ever made.

Damn, let me scrounge up my money in my change bucket. You're making me feel ashamed for not having owned it sooner! :D

I really enjoyed the end of Cat People and all of "I walked with a Zombie". If all his films are that good then I have to get the box set, its only a matter of time now....

Not a bad one in the batch. Not even a "least good" one.

You oughta check out NIGHT OF THE DEMON too...it's a UK production directed by Lewton's right-hand man, Tourneur...it's an amazing horror picture in its own regard. Very chilling.

hey reminds me of an essay by Moretti where he looks at Frankenstein and Dracula through a Marxist lense. Basically Dracula represents the bourgeoise factory owner, setting up his shop then expanding the empire to London. Frankenstein's creature is cobbled together from pieces of the uneducated working class and this is Victor's fear; the self education of the proletariat. I guess the same can apply to zombies as others have said. Check out the essay though. "Dialet of Fear" by Franco Moretti.
