The memories of the many, many, many AD&D 1st ed. sessions I played will always remain my fondest gaming memories. Regardless of what people think of the system itself, the importance of this game, and the influence it had, really cannot be overstated.

Does anyone know of a detailed exposition of exactly what contributions Gygax and Arneson made individually to D&D?

A sad day. I'm surprised that Dave was only 61, he looked much older in person. I met him two years ago at the local game shop, where they were having a big D&D promotion. All D&D products on sale, free hot dogs, soda pop and cake, several tables of D&D games going on, and a chance to meet Dave Arneson. I randomly stopped by late in the day, and one of the store managers who knows me well introduced me to Dave as "a young upstart game designer." Dave and I chatted for close to half hour. He seemed like a really nice guy with a good sense of humor.

I'll drink to that. Dave was a great guy.

If I'm not mistaken dave was the guy that actually came up with the idea to have players in charge of a single character, instead of a platoon, the concept of a of a referee who is charge of how the characters will interact with their environment, and, most importantly IMHO, whe was the creator of the concept of a campaighn world-- Blackmoor being the first ever.

GG basic took most of Dave's ideas and refined them into what became D&D.
