Hey all.

MMP has done a very short reprint run of A Victory Lost [less than 100 copies available]. While they've mentioned a full reprint is coming, they've never committed to any kind of date. Per the website, everything is the same as the original printing save the Player Aid Card, which has been reprinted on thinner stock.

I know some find these IGS games a bit too abstract, but I kind of dig this one and it's been getting pricey in the resale market. This being MMP, I wouldn't count on a full blown reprint anytime soon after these are gone [since, if anything, the number of ASL Core Modules that need to come back to market, including Beyond friggin' Valor (yet again), are almost certainly well ahead of this in the print queue.

Now if only they'd do the same for Monty's Gamble: Market Garden, which I was ignorant off/ignored just long enough to have it go out of print and then through the roof price-wise...

I'll be honest. I don't like this game very much at all. It is very stripped down. I find there is almost no character in it. On top of that it's all about getting the same units to activate as many times as possible in a single turn. Panzers warp back and forth 3 times in one turn.

I dunno. I know this is well thought of. It's a pretty solid, tight design. But I wouldn't recommend it, I don't know why people are so into this game in particular over many other, better releases.

1. clean rules
2. easy to play
3. traditional hex and counter games are still pretty popular with a dedicated core
4. it looks nice
5. interesting scenario

i haven't played it yet, but am keen to. it looks like a very good game. i think your point about it being stripped down is probably a positive. i played the old SPI arnhem game (late 70s) the other day and that was a very streamlined game, yet it still made for a very decent experience (albeit a slow one).think this style of game won't always appeal to wargamers who enjoy something a little more involved and theme driven, but if you fancy a pure head to head battle of wits, this is definitely the kind of game i'd pick to play.

I've played AVL and whilst I enjoyed it, I didn't think it was all it's cracked up to be. The biggest problem is that the system encourages micromanagement of unit positioning in relation to HQs which is both gamey and a massive AP hazard. The second biggest problem is that Soviet STAVKA turns in which the Russian player gets to move every unit on the map cause huge downtime for the Axis player.

Other than that, it has a lot to offer - it is streamlined yet tactically and historically engaging - but I found the problems overshadowed the good stuff.

Considering that a lot of peolpe like the thing A LOT and other HATE it, it is probably a good game. I like the look of the counters. B)

depends who you play with. this style of game is more fun if you play a bit foot loose and fancy free i find. of course, that requires a like minded opponent, which is easier said than done. i played storm over stalingrad in 2 hours last night with a new opponent. lightning.

Also, and this makes me very anti-old school, odds based CRTs are not my favorite.
