Those additional cards exist in the Orruk and Skeleton expansions.

Maybe we should be talking more about it.
Right now I run my Bloodskin (blood reavers) warband. I've pretty much tossed all the named upgrades except for Garrick (sp?) and Saek. I use the other three to run around and grab objectives for quick glory points, buff Garrick and Saek and in the latter half of the game unleash hell on my opponent(s) with those two.
Lots of fun and having some decent success solely with the base game. I do know I need a few more cards though and the Ironjawz are calling me.

Shadespire is a hoot in multiplayer, but I think Gorechosen is the superior multiplayer pick-up-and-play casual game. No deck assembly required.

We prefer the play of Shadespire to the play of Gorechosen quite a bit, although we do all dig Gorechosen still.

Also, I can't remember, but does this do the FFG thing where there will be cards I want for my Stormcast deck in the Skeleton pack? That's sort of a non starter for me.

Yes, unless you remain blissfully unaware. I haven't found there to be power creep and decks just built from the core seem just as strong, but there are cards you can use and build around for pretty much any warband released in an expansion that contains another warband. These are neutral, not faction specific cards.

Edit - to be more clear, this is a very different case than something like X-Wing where you need certain upgrades to make certain ships viable. In Shadespire, you are not guaranteed to draw specific cards since you draw randomly from your deck and don't typically burn through the entire thing. This means any single card is de-emphasized on the whole.

This is awesome for two reasons. 1) You don't need to go buy 3 expansions to get 3 more of a certain card. 2) Even if there is an Uber card (I'm not sure of one yet), it only can appear once...and again it may not even get drawn. This makes buying the expansions less necessary.
However, naturally, buying more expansions will allow you to tune your decks to play differently, but I'm not convinced expansions are necessary to be competitve...just to maybe freshen up your game if you run the same warband over and over.
Another key point to consider, unlike a CCG, there's more than just card flopping in play here. Model placement and die rolling are huge. So, even though deckbuilding is a fun part of the game, it's not the end all be all. That's probably why Charles' friends can show up, roll their own, and still have fun.
The game is great and I should probably buy all the warbands just to at least have when the game goes oop. Or, maybe, just buy all of the 'Shadespire' setting warbands for now.
Edit: I currently only have the base game and seem to be able to hold my own. I credit some of that to years of playing BB and seeing 'tackle zones' for assists.
