Online Degrees?

Online Degrees? was created by barrowdown
Does anyone have experience with online degree programs?

I may end up getting enrolled in one in the near future and was curious how they feel. I'd specifically be looking at ones affiliated with a traditional university.

some industries don't take them seriously at all (in interviews), others do. It totally depends what industry it is.

My current degrees are from real world programs so this would be supplemental. The local university does not offer graduate degrees in finance, so I need to look elsewhere for options.

Beyond looking for programs attached to a traditional university, I don't really have a basis for narrowing down the options from there. I'm not even sure how comparable it is to the traditional program for universities offering both options.

i was about to say that Finance (which I'm in) is probably tolerant of online degrees because the CFA program is practically an online course. You do self study for 750 hours, do 18 hours over 3 exams and then you just need the work experience. I imagine a M.Sc in Finance (which I assume you're looking at) would be fine if done through an online thingie.

i like the idea of it being out of a traditional university which gives it additional credence. Say, unlike Trump University.

Always, always make sure it is from an accredited university. Accredation happens through a number of a regional accreditors but take the time to make sure you're with a uni with decent accredation. Many degrees are not, and aren't worth anything to everyone.

Almost every good university is also non-profit. That's another easy way to screen.

Universities are also required to give outcome statistics---graduation rates, debt loads, etc. Check those out.

Being totally honest, I have not yet been convinced about the educational value of online degrees. I don't think we've figured it out yet, the model that will work. But I still respect the need for them, I just think it is much harder to learn from them than the equivalent traditional program. In my experience, online courses require extreme discipline and self motivation to be educationally useful. So my advice would be that it's going to take a lot of personal motivation to get info out of such a degree--- not to pass, but to acquire useful, long lasting, knowledge.

Thanks for the responses. I'm not particularly concerned about debt load as most of it will be covered by my employer. Part of their requirements would be that it has to be accredited, so that should weed out most obvious frauds.

I'd prefer to use the local university, but they do not have degree options that cover what I want.

I have successful friends who got Penn State and UO Phoenix degrees. Both in business and finance.

I think online degrees work for maths business as it's universal. Obviously not the same weight as a U of Chicago degree.
