I'll add my voice to the chorus of Blindsight supporters. It is a great first-contact story with truly alien ETs, and it also explores transhumanism, which is a common theme for the author.

Your club should be open to "hard" science fiction though (well, hard-ish: there's some hand-waving in this book too). Some things happen in the story that are ambiguous and really open to interpretation, especially since the narrator is established as being unreliable. If those things aren't a problem then you're in for a badass, smart story with some mind-blowing ideas.

There are a lot of good choices in here. I'd second Blindsight and The Stars, My Destination. Ready Player One is quite popular, but I thought it was schlocky. Altered Carbon was a cool idea in search of someone who doesn't write airport thrillers. You could look at some Philip K. Dick. We spent 50 minutes talking about the first 40 pages of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Man in the High Castle will generate some discussion, much as Lost did. If you can read Gene Wolf's entire Book of the New Sun then you are in for a weird, special treat, but is like 5,000 pages long.

I think Ted Chiang's collection of short stories, "Stories of Your Life" is very good, and would be ideal for a book club.
Why you should read Ted Chiang

At last count, he has netted four Nebulas, four Hugos, one Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award, and four Locus awards, among many others — all with an oeuvre that wouldn’t even strain the covers of one mid-size book.

I was just about to mention Ted Chiang's collection.

Other worthwhile collection of short stories - Paolo Bacigalupi's Pump Six and Other Stories - recently hit me like a ton of bricks. His vision of a bleak near-future (sometimes not so near) is perhaps too close for comfort, which is precisely what I love. I'm currently going through his back catalog - YA novels Ship Breaker and The Drowned Cities, plus The Windup Girl and The Water Knife.

If you want a great homage to the Golden Age of SF wrapped around a generation ship story, all in a compact 300 p. novel, check out this year's Arkwright by Allen Steele.

Can't recommend SF without a mention for Charles Robert Wilson's Spin.

Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer is really good, and different. Ancillary Justice is really amazing as well. I have a few others that have been highly recommended to me that I have not yet read, but those two are really good.

Big thanks to everyone contributing, a lot to take in here. I'm sure it may fuel several of the next few selections not just mine.
