...that they play "Amazing Grace" at Spock's funeral in Wrath of Khan. He wouldn't want some emotional religious hymn played at his funeral! He's want some kind of Vulcan logic shanty or something.

Maybe they hoped that Spock would ascend to Heaven. Praise Jesus!

I operated on the assumption that Scotty wanted to honor him somehow using the bagpipes. And of course there aren't many songs you can play on bagpipes besides Amazing Grace.

It's the only song Scotty knows on the bagpipes.

My undergrad is from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Guess it's sister city!
I lived in a honors dorm (nerd!) that was directly beneath the lawn that held bag pipe rehearsal.
Every fall, it was tough.
But by spring, just before the Highlands games, they were sounding very good.

Spock wouldn't say it was dumb, he would say that it was highly illogical.

He'd have wanted the reciting of Pi to the 20,000th decimal place to represent the fullness of the circle of life, obviously.

I'm pretty sure he would've been rather insulted at Kirk's "his was the most... human" line as well.

In fact, he does feel that way in response to pretty much the same line in Star Trek VI:

Kirk: Spock, you want to know something? Everybody's human.
Spock: I find that remark . . . insulting.

I'm assuming because it was the most generic/universal and therefore presumed least offensive religious hymn they could come up with for such an occasion in order to hammer home the Biblical imagery and foretell the resurrection story. Plus, funerals aren't for the people who die; they're for the survivors.

In the spirit of it being a naval vessel, Taps should have been played instead.
