What QUOTE(s) are you repeating?

Jeff's post...

Mr. White wrote: I think the quote from each movie I use the most in everyday use is:

Conan: "Two snakes, coming together. Facing each other!" *flex arms with fists pointing to one another*
(usually if I'm looking for something and someone wants to know what)

FotR: "I ain't dropping no eaves, honest!"
(usually if someone catches me off guard)

got me thinking about how much fun it is just to use memorable quotes from TV or movies in real life. Either because it fits the situation or you just like saying it a whole bunch.

I was thinking people could share some of their favourite quotes and if you want to make it fun, don't say what it's from. That way someone has to guess it (without google help) later on if they want to contribute? That could be fun.

I'll kick things off with a quote I say to myself disturbingly often. i don't know why it's stuck in my head over the years....but it has...

"There's not a lot of meat in these gym mats."

I've made an attempt to stop swearing for my kids sake. I don't think saying 'fuck' or 'shit' is wrong but I can't stand the idea of other parents judging me for it so I figured it would be easier to just drop it. I didn't notice at first but I started subbing in 'Jiminy Cricket' as my swear of choice. I did some minor research and it turns out it was a sub for swears going back to the turn of the last century, but I didn't know that. I realized later that I got it from....

anyone know?

I also say 'what's the rumpus' a fair amount if anyone can get that one. That should be easier.

I don't know either of Jeff's choices.

I think "What's the rumpus?" is MILLER'S CROSSING, which is where I get all of my "You're giving me the high hat" material.

These all have common origin:
"We're set to pop here, honey."
"It ain't armed robbery if the gun ain't loaded."
"O-kay, then."

"I'm the pater familias!"

"That'll do, Pig."

"Orange whip? Orange whip? Orange whip? Three orange whips."

"Shhh! You smell something?"

The gym mats quote is from the Simpsons when Lunch Lady Doris is grinding one up for school lunches. I won't clog up the thread with Simpsons quotes, but one I use a lot is when I pick up my cat, Pixie, from behind. She's a bit of a chub and even though she can't make noise when she meows, that doesn't stop her from craning her head back and faux-meowing in my face, and that's when I butcher a Ralph Wiggum quote and say, "Oh Pixie, your breath smells like cat food!" in a mock-grumpy voice, because I'm a big dork. :P

Another one we say is: "PO-TAY-TOES! Boil 'em, mash 'em, stickeminastew!" Not so much recently, though.

One that my boys (particularly the youngest) like is, "Hold on to your butts."

"It ain't armed robbery if the gun ain't loaded." is Raising Arizona, and I suspect "We're set to pop here, honey." is, too.

"Orange whip? Orange whip? Orange whip? Three orange whips." is The Blues Brothers.

"Shhh! You smell something?" is Ghostbusters.

Nice job Jeb! Pretty sure all of yours are from Oh Brother except the first one which is maybe Raising Arizona?

Edit: No no no... that's Oh Brother too.

Didn't mean to confuse folks--my first three are common origin: RAISING ARIZONA. pater familias is the only O BROTHER one, but I also refer to "geographical oddities" because of that movie. Those Coen Bros make some quotable films, I tell ya.
  • "That supposed to make us friends or somethin'?"
  • "Mink is Eddie Dane's boy."
  • "When there was no crawdad to be found, we ate sand."
  • "Now prison life is structured..."
  • "Well, that's like, your opinion, man."
  • "I'm shomer shabbas."

I quote lots of Cohen Bros. movies myself.

'There's plenty of art right in that ring'

'We're men, we wrestled!'

'Man it's hot in here'

' Throw a rock in here and you're bound to hit one... and do me a favour, throw it hard.'

'Where's my honey!?'

... well mainly two films from the same time period actually. Although I've quoted a lot of Lebowski over the years too.

"That supposed to make us friends or somethin'?" - can't recall
"Mink is Eddie Dane's boy." -MC
"When there was no crawdad to be found, we ate sand." - OBWAT
"Now prison life is structured..." - OBWAT? not sure
"Well, that's like, your opinion, man." - BL
"I'm shomer shabbas." - BL

Is this Black Barney? Or is it an actual film?

You gotta go watch RAISING ARIZONA, JonJacob. That's your assignment. Watch it, then come back and answer these questions:
  • What kind of home did HI and Ed move into?
  • What did the jammies look like?
  • What does Ed have for a husband?
  • What keeps you from RUINin' your appreciation of the finer things?

Funny, I've seen it a couple of times but I can't remember much of this.

Was it a trailer they moved into. I seem to remember that..
I'm pretty sure the jammies had 'Yoda's and shit on 'em'
Ed's husband... hmmm, I can't quite recall that. I know the characters name but this is a specific reference.
The last one's a blank too. The quotes I use from that movie, although I don't remember them that well anymore.

'we're using code names'
'I ain't runnin a daisy factory here' - or something like that
'we looking to adopt because these one's here is getting too big to cuddle'
'Why's it take so many Pollocks to screw in a lightbulb? Because they're so damn stupid!"

I also love the bit where they talk about life being so great they just wanted someone else to share it with. I don't know how it was worded but I love that part. It's one of my favourite comedies from them... but admittedly I prefer they're slightly more arty films.

But I think I recognize some of your original quotes now.

cage says 'we're ready to pop here honey' but I can't recall why
The 'ain't armed robbery' is Nick Cage defending his criminal stupidity.
Okay then is the parole board..? I think

Yeah, I should watch it again. It's been a long time now.

... and no one can get Jiminy Cricket? It's one of the most famous and most quoted movies of all time.

Ahhh, you're fine. It's not fair, I've seen it more than 100 times, easily. They did move into a trailer, but it was referred to as "a starter home in suburban Tempe." Jammies do, indeed, have "Yodas and shit on 'em." Ed's "got a MAN for a husband," to which she replies, "'at ain't no answer." Nathan Jr would be allowed to watch football, so as to not ruin his appreciation of the finer things, and "O-kay then" is said at least six or seven times.

I do use that, "Y'all hear that? We're usin' code names!" as well.

I should also note that if a frog had wings it wouldn't bump its ass a-hoppin'; that you're young and you got your health--what you want with a job?; you should be wary of that mother-scratcher Bill Parker, and to keep your damn hands off my wife.

Jiminy Cricket--maybe from A Christmas Story?

Nathan Sr. is an incredible character with a ton of great lines. Love that guy.

and no, it's not A Christmas Story. This film is older and more famous than that.
