Disgustipater wrote: Watching Stranger Things 2. I thought the first season was fine, but didn't leave me any interest in season 2. Then my wife started watching it, and I got sucked in. I like it better than the first season, probably because it doesn't focus on Eleven. I've found her scenes to be the least compelling. I like all the "greater threat" stuff. Just finished episode 7 and I am glad that episode is over and we can go back to the other stuff, even if it does involve Eleven.

Episode 7 was probably the worst episode of the entire show. Just a ridiculous, boring waste of time.

Thankfully the final two episodes of this season are a blast. Man, I can't believe they made me like Steve!

Black Barney wrote: Anyone catch SNL with Larry David and Miley Cyrus? It’s like they were intentionally pushing the PC barrier as much as possible, like one of those roasts almost. Larry David joking about how to pick up women in a concentration camp and stuff. I dunno, it was pretty awful and more importantly, not funny. Why they put Miley in sketches I don’t know

There was one sketch that was good where they were pitching Public Service Announcements to sensitize people to being more aware of Political correctness but would end each one with a brutal tag line like “Treat each other with respect, don’t be a retard”. That was ok

Yeah, David's monologue was awful. I personally think Cyrus is always awful, but apparently she's a huge star anyway.

I liked the PSA sketch as well, and I liked the Trump kids on Weekend Update. Everything else was quite sub-par. But, that's kinda SNL's thing. They're the least consistent show I've ever seen.

at least it's not consistently terrible, there's that.

Yeah, i heard the Trump kids were great. I need to find that online and watch it. I gave up on the episode well before Weekend Update.

Miley used to be okay but she's been awful for quite some time now. Also, she's way too old now.

repoman wrote: Watched the first two episodes of Anne With an E which is a new version of Anne of Green Gables streaming on Netflix.

Anne of Green Gables is often said to be the Little House on the Prairie of Canada. Which is apt.

Anne with an E is simple good family entertainment. Beautifully shot with some top rate acting not the least from the girl playing Anne, Amybeth McNulty. If you are tired of death, darkness, murder, and monsters you may find this enjoyable. It's good to feel a bit uplifted after watching a show once in a while.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've been enjoying this.

New season of The Detectorists starts in a couple days. Another beautifully shot show that isn't dark and the writing and characters are top notch. The title probably makes it sound like a reality show, but its not at all.

Finished Mindhunter on Netflix. It was great, and I certainly hope there will be a season 2. Don't judge it on the first episode; it's the weakest of the bunch.

Mr. Robot, anyone? The last two episodes have been fantastic.

The library only lets me check out a tv show for seven days, so it's a binge-watching challenge to watch a full season of a standard network tv show that occupies a one-hour slot. That's over 15 hours of tv in one week. Doable, but takes a large bite of my leisure time. So I don't usually do it anymore, unless it's a holiday week like this.

Agents of SHIELD season 2 started well, but now I'm in the middle of the season and everything seems so predictable. Skye, don't go to the subterranean temple or the bad thing will happen. Sorry, I had to go anyway. Sigh. I still like a couple of the characters, including Bobby Morse (or as we comic fans call her, Mockingbird), so I will keep going. I have a feeling that once they get over the heavily-belabored origin of Skye's new powers, the show may become entertaining again.

I've been watching, but every week something has to remind me. It's not really doing it for me much. I think I am tired of the whole "let's confuse the viewer until the last episode" shtick.

Oh yeah, killing it this season. Every new season I need a big recap... Where the hell are we again? Who is that guy again? It’s pretty dense, but I’m impressed with how much they cram in there. I might have expected last week’s ep to be the season finale.

I just started watching it while I grade papers. It is like a less-mystical True Detective, in a way.

Currently watching Michiko & Hatshin, an anime made by the same folks that did Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. It starts out fairly unpleasant, like a cross between Dancer in the Dark and a bit of Female Prisoner 701: Scorpion. Then it turns into a latina version of Lone Wolf and Cub, taking place in a fictional country that is like Brazil, Mexico, and Cuba all at once. There is a lot of action, some nice emotional beats, and some sporadic humor. Michiko reminds me of my drug addict ex-girlfriend, only violent and not an addict. The same rational irrationality that led my ex into so much trouble, making sense in the moment though making terrible life choices. This show uses a lovely and lively color palette, especially during the closing credits. The lead characters are difficult to like and yet I can't stop cheering them on.

I'm about half-way through The Punisher. It's okay, and I think Jon Bernthal is really good. But man, is it a slow burn. There are three or four storylines, and they have yet to intersect in any meaningful, interesting way.

I was a little bit concerned about the tone of the show, given the politically charged atmosphere these days, and America's never-ending fetishism of guns. Aside from the opening credits, which are basically gun-porn, I think it's been handled pretty well. Frank has done some bad stuff, and it's destroying his humanity. The show depicts a fair amount of gruesome violence, but there are consequences to that violence, which is an important point that most action movies (and all superhero movies) never want to address.

Been watching a Netflix show called Atypical. It’s about a high school kid with autism. It’s mostly a comedy, and a pretty good show. Too bad it’s only 8 episodes and season two isn’t expected for almost a year.

Godless, a Netflix Western miniseries, has my attention after the first two episodes. The abundance of female characters adds an interesting slant and I enjoy that social issues are highlighted while weaving through the slightly typical revenge narrative. Acting, writing, and cinematography are all top notch and it has a very large cinematic feel to it. I also appreciate that it doesn't appear to waste your time with fluff.
