saw Wonder Woman. I thought it was mostly terrible. It was either that or "Allied". Watched XX also, the first of the four shorts at least had some interesting allegory, the second one I admit to being hypnotized by cleavage, then there was the one out with the 3 kids out in the wild camping, and that was terrible, I dont remember the fourth one except it wasnt very good. the weird animated doll contraption thing in the interludes was better than the films I think. My kid has pestered to watch Captain Underpants. I think it will be the film of the week based on this weekends experience. Also browsing for it led me to "Sausage Party" which quickly showed itself not to be a cute kids cartoon, but also not some soft porn movie either. Based on the trailer, I am not sure who it is aimed at, it mainly reminded of that nightmarish talking orange on Youtube.

I watched the 2016 remake of Magnificent Seven. It should have been called Okay Seven.

I watched the Shining again. I've seen a bunch of Kubrick movies recently and while they're generally very good, I have sort of decided I don't need to see most of them again. The Shining is definitely an exception. It is still brilliant and works as a modern movie.

This time when I saw it, maybe it's because of the current political environment, maybe it's because I'm a lot older now, but the movie is deeply, deeply exploring the white male psyche and privilege. Jack is weak and untalented, and everything about the movie is him reflexively punching down in the depth of his insecurity and inferiority---against his wife (the yelling match telling her she's been holding him back forever), his son, the casual racism he engages in with the spirit presence, etc. And in the end, he even dies pathetically---he can't physically overpower his wife, who beats him up and locks him up. He ultimately dies crying and helpless in the snow and freezes to death when he can't even manage to kill his young son.

These things were always there but it says a lot about where my mind is these days that this was the first time I really saw it.

The second statement offers some clues as to the origins of the first.

Watched Logan last night, which I thought was good but I was expecting better from the reviews. It was great to see a big-budget superhero film depart from the usual script, but I didn't see much of the Big Themes And Pathos some critics had suggested were there. What I did see was an interesting parallel about the anger engendered by the slow death of the traditional male role model. Which, to be fair, is a lot more than you get in most big-budget superhero films.

Would be interested to see a discussion of which movie is best between Logan, Wonder Woman, Thor and the new Spiderman, all from this year. I hear all four are excellent (I’ve only seen Logan), so it would be neat to see which one came out on top.

Was Guardians 2 this year? IF so throw that one in the mix as well

Yeah, Guardians 2 came out in April.

I've only seen 3 of those 5 (Guardians 2, Spidey, and Thor), and Spidey was the best of those by a long long ways.

My son and I saw Thor: Ragnarok last night. It's the best of the Thor movies, which granted, isn't much of a compliment. The Thor movies are the weakest mini-franchise in the larger MCU, with Thor 2 being the worst MCU movie of them all.

Thor 3 is pretty weird. More than anything else, it reminds me of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, with a lot of very colorful, crazy aliens and planets. The movie is funny, although the reviews claiming it was the "funniest MCU movie ever" are wildly overblown. That distinction still belongs to Guardians 1, easily. The movie does an okay job of standing on its own merits, without leaning too hard on continuity with other movies. Mostly just some inside jokes, like when Hulk whips Thor around like a dishrag, just like he did with Loki in Avengers. If you remember that scene from the Avengers, it's funny. If not, it's still funny.

I have a friend who says MCU movies are like pancakes. Pancakes are fine, everybody enjoys pancakes. But pancakes are all kinda the same, and nobody gets too excited about them. Thor 3 is another MCU pancake.

Edited to add: I forgot to mention that Cate Blanchett was great, and weirdly kind of hot with her slinky catsuit and antler helmet and raccoon-eye makeup.

gah, you gotta see Logan! I think my hidden agenda was really wondering if people think that Logan really stands out above and beyond all this more traditional superhero movies. Like I imagine Thor Ragnorok and Guardians II will be very very similar viewing experiences.

I'd rank them in that order, but they're all really good. Ask me tomorrow, and I might move the bottom three around a little bit.

No 'kind of' about it.

I've listened to the actor commentary track for LotR. Every time Cate Blanchett showed up in the film, the actors turned into teenage boys. "It's Cate Blanchett! Oh man, I'd crawl through five miles of broken glass to hear her fart over a pay phone.*" I wondered about that, because these were the actors commenting, and they should be used to being surrounded by beautiful women. Maybe it turns out it's because she wears that goth look to work. :)

I admit that I have only seen about half the modern superhero movies. In 2017, I have only seen Logan and Wonder Woman, though I plan to see Thor next weekend.
So my opinion is of limited value. But I will rank them anyway.

1. Logan was powered by strong performances from the main characters, and transcended the superhero movie template by breaking all the rules. It is a tragic and ultra-violent movie with compelling characters and a hopeful ending.

2. Wonder Woman is an above average comic book movie that is only special because it is a rare action movie that actually respects women, and because it broke a losing streak of shitty DC movies in recent years. Chris Pine threatened to steal his scenes, but Gal Godot holds on with surprising presence and talent.

3. Thor: Ragnorak will be the next movie I see, because the trailer looked good, the reviews and word of mouth are both great, and I actually enjoyed the first two Thor movies. Hemsworth isn't just a big guy with a handsome face, he can actually act and even has decent comedic timing.

4. Spider-man: Homecoming is a movie that I will eventually see, but the trailers didn't entice to see it in the theater. I've heard good things about it, but I'm at a point in my life where it is difficult to care about the antics of a plucky teenager. Spider-man has a very good rogues gallery in comics, but Vulture barely makes the top 20 if I am feeling generous.

5. After hearing so much good about Guardians of the Galaxy, I finally watched it on dvd shortly before Guardians of the Galaxy II came out. I like what they tried to do, but I found a couple of the action scenes tedious, and most of the jokes fell flat. And I actually like these characters in the comics, and I was even a fan of the original team back in the '70s. So I will eventually see Guardians II, but it's pretty low on my list of things to do.

I've only watch Logan but I didn't like it very much, the kids being almost mute and background noise bothers me and the solution to all a gun, it looked like a revolver factory ad.

I've only seen 3 of those 5 (Spidey, Logan and Wonder Woman), and Spidey was the best of those by a tiny margin. Logan was ok, but as was mentioned not as edgy as it was said to be. I for one always knew it was going to end exactly like this for him. But I have to admit it was satisfying to see it competently realised.

My wife actually asked to see WW because of all the hype of it being a superhero movie for girls or something along these lines. That's what made it unbearable. DC just can't do lighthearted, it seems. We sat through most of it, then turned it off just when it thought it was being very intense, just to rise our middle fingers in unison. That actual women and girls interested in superheroines have to turn to garbage like this is infuriating. The genre still has a very long way to go. I would recommend trying out a female character who doesn't need a guy to become a person.

I have seen all 5 (having pre-teen kids means that non-superhero movie choices that satisfy everyone are rare).

I would say my order is Thor:Ragnarok, Logan, Spiderman: Homecoming, Wonder Woman, Guardians 2.

Apart from the famous storming the trench scene I didn't enjoy Wonder Woman that much (but my 11 year old daughter rates it the best which is why it is important), and GotG2 is too much of a retread. The other 3 are all good and it would come down to personal preference as to the order. Thor reminded me of the original GotG, which is my favourite Marvel movie, and is just a lot of fun. Logan is good, but maybe the hype inflated it too much for me as it is not like The Dark Knight at all in quality, and Spiderman is surprisingly refreshing and the only Spiderman film I have enjoyed (don't get the love for the first two McGuire ones).

I've seen all 5 as well. List order likely to change depending on what mood I'm in or which movie I've re-watched most recently.

1) Thor: Ragnarok - Most entertaining movie I've seen this year. Basically the opposite of whatever DC is doing.

2) Logan - Interesting and well crafted but I'd rather watch several other X-Men movies that are more fun.

3) Spider-Man: Homecoming - Michael Keaton was great as the Vulture. One of the best MCU villains so far. Considering he's probably the best Batman that's not surprising. Despite not being an origin story it completely felt like an origin story.

4) Wonder Woman - Overhyped but definitely not terrible. Its a fantastic DCU movie that equates to what would be an average MCU movie.

5) Guardians 2 - Too much Baby Groot and too many jokes that didn't land. Disappointing compared to the first and definitely too long.

MCU does have better movies, but Wonder Woman's No Man's Land scene is the best scene I've ever seen in superhero movie. Excellent build up and execution. Too bad Ares's such a garbage.
