My four year old decided to make the observation over breakfast that daddy is not cool

Oh

Oh really

Lets just say the speakers were pumped to maximum and the whole family was forced to observe the shock and awe of Boney M's DADDY (fucking) COOL complete with full range of 1970s disco moves.

people often ask whether I'm more of an entertainer or an educator. Hmm, I muse, to me, they're NOT mutually exclusive, so............

I've been singing 'bustin on the stank cup' to the tune of 'bustin makes me feel good' for the last couple of days. Randomly changing words here and there... so much fun!

This made me recall how Ray Parker Jr. was busted by Huey Lewis and the News for ripping off 'I Want a New Drug' so I listened to Sports again in it's entirety. It's a great album... not as good as I remember but really solid 80's pop that does exactly what it should. I love that album completely un-ironically and long before I read American Psycho. It made me feel very nostalgic though so I can't totally trust my opinion on it.

I've listend to Flora by the Botanist probably ten times in the last two days. I think my favourite aspect of black metal is the ability to try out what would normally be avant guard idea's in a genre that allows it and makes them kind of accessible. People that I can play black metal for might not listen to Stockhausen or Schoenberg with me but they can check out something like this Botanist record. Which is a great record and not nearly as weird as you may think. Thanks to Barnes for pointing it out. I wrote two cool tunes as a result of this record, one in seven and the other in eleven and they don't sound awkward at all. Which is the trick when writing in compound times like that. You can really tell it's a dulcimer that Botanist is using, at first you might be fooled into thinking it's an electric guitar but honestly, any instrument sounds like an electric guitar once it's amplified and effected simply because that's the instrument we're most used to hearing treated that way. The way the melodies are constructed is clearly a percussive thing and several of the driving melodies have a 1-2-1-2-1-2 kind of vibe that makes it obvious he's using a percussive instrument to create his melodies.

It's limiting to be sure, but considering it's the only record I've heard like that I imagine you could make a career out of being the only guy doing that.

I also tried to listen to a bunch of stuff that I got from various people in the best albums of the year thread. St. Vincent (which practically everybody recommended) was cool but I still don't think she's beaten herself, Paris is Burning is still her best tune for me. I like her though, all three albums are interesting. Turns out she is Tuck Andres's niece.. I didn't know that.

Who's Tuck Andress? He's a cheesball guitar virtuoso that had some minor fame among musicians in the nineties. Great player... no taste and bad tone. Seriously great player though and now that I know she's his niece I can certainly tell that St. Vincent learned some tricks from her uncle... this is him here and I warn you, he is cheesy.

I listened to Spoon as well... it was good rock, not my thing by good catchy rock. I can't remember the names of all the bands anymore but there was some punk in there and I gave it another shot... still don't like Punk and it's a real shame because I want to. I listened to Dead Kennedy's as a kid and Dayglo Abortions and liked it well enough but a part of me was always pretending. The messages were ok, the music was usually predictable and the lyrics generally dated pretty badly. I think I want to pick up a Cramps disc sometime soon, I remember liking them a lot. I have to keep trying... I do like the Sex Pistols one album I guess.

Lots more too... I've been insatiable lately. Broke out some old Tom Waits last night since my brothers girlfriend doesn't know him that well. He was the guy that first taught me how cool good lyrics can be. I remember being like 10 years old and my old man would blast Heartattack and Vine out his old Dodge Ramcharger and there was a line in one of the tunes "Don't you know there ain't no Devil there's just God when he's drunk" - that was the beginning for me. That was a line that a ten year old could understand and I was on the road to writing lyrics for the rest of my life after that experience. So it was fun to go back. I showed her Rain Dogs and Bone Machine... still really great albums with lots of catchy tunes. They totally could have been pop smashes with the right promotion.

and more and more and more...

I'm listening to Wye Oak right now and kind of digging it. Taken from another friend of mine's list from last year. Anyone else listen to this thing? I'm wondering how it holds up and thinking about just buying it.

A woman I know is in love with Dir en Grey. It's way outside of my normal listening habits. I like some of it and think their intros are usually pretty good. What do some of the metal fans here think about them?

I've been listening to punk girl and riot grrrl music lately, while working on a mix for my girlfriend. Bands like Heavens to Betsy, Scrawl, Bratmobile, Slant 6, The Donnas, and Bikini Kill.

A steady diet of Thievery Corp, Ursula 1000, and Thunderball here. DC stonertronica at its finest. Ursula 1k's "70s Italian Porn Soundtrack"-type stuff, in particular, has become a go-to when I have to grind out an 18+ hour writing bender for work [it's funny how every generation seems to find a way to remake the Vampyros Lesbos soundtrack in some roundabout way...now if only every generation would find a way to remake the Ohio Players' LP covers. "Fire" and "Honey" are Reasons 1A and 1B why the LP should never, ever die... 4" CD inserts or, worse, 1" iTunes jpgs are simply inadequate to the point of being downright disrespectful]. For a "more hippie than hipster" version of that vibe, I load up on a "jamtronica" band out of Philly called Lotus. They were a revelation when I first caught them in a tiny club 10 years ago; the genre has become cliche and fairly played out these days, but these guys are still great.

The other thing I've been playing to death is the new Velvet Underground 6-disc "utterly absurd edition" re-release of The Velvet Underground. I don't know that I needed 3 different mixes of the record, but it really IS kind of entertaining to basically listen to 3 different engineers desperately trying to find a way to make it sound like anyone involved could either play or sing or that any song could possibly be packaged as something remotely marketable. They all failed, but 45 years later, the record is still a fucking classic. I just wish they'd actually get into the vaults and come up some cohesive live material [versus onsey-twosey tracks from random shows] instead of the 8 millionth repackaging of the same outtakes. I have to believe some decent full shows exist simply because (1) Warhol recorded [in some fashion] just about everything, and (2) they played the Fillmore and a couple of other Bill Graham-promoted venues, and Graham's people taped *every damned thing,* and were generally pretty smart about archiving that shit for forever. (I mean, FFS, Wolfgang's Vault [Bill G's kid's ultimate, but pretty savvy and not toooo exploitative, monetization of his old man's vast holdings] has trotted out very clean 50-year old Big Mamma Thornton recordings and she didn't play more than a couple of BGP-venue shows. SOMEONE has to have half-way decent VU tapes out there besides the 3rd gen copies of Fred "Sonic" Smith's Radio Shack-recorder-sat-on-the-stacks tapes. I know they were generally considered to be a hopeless mess with little future back in their time, but there are more decent recordings from ColdBlood, Cactus, It's a Beautiful Day, and a zillion other classic "undercard" peformers to be had than there are VU recordings. That just ain't right.]

Oh, and for no apparent reason I could discern, out of nowhere, I was utterly compelled to break out Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway remaster last week. I guess I had some subconscious belief that my AM commute would be improved by a young Peter Gabriel dressed as a daffodil ...

Perfect music for Texas. Seems like all I listen to anymore is classic or alt country and hip hop, neither of which you could have paid me to tolerate in high school.

What a dumbshit I was.

Dog, I assume you have the Quine tapes of the VU, right? Those are about the best live recordings I've ever heard from them. I bought the 3CD release like 12-13 years back (fuuuuck, I hate getting old).

A friend really wanted to go see the Koffin Kats at Reggie's in Chicago last friday, so I tagged along. It was an energetic show and they loved doing goofy things with the stand-up bass.

Some guy made a video of one of their songs to mad max running bikers off the road.

I started digging into XTC. We play "Plans For Nigel" and "Generals and Majors" pretty much daily at work and I'd really liked those two songs for awhile now and I'd been meaning to check out what else they had to offer. I really have no perspective on these guys, but they sound like they were a bit ahead of their time. I started with "Drums and Wires," which has some great stuff and a whole bunch of songs I imagine will grow on me, but _DAMN_ is Black Sea a great album. I've listened to a bit of the singles collection, recognized a few songs like "Senses Working Overtime" and "Dear God." I'm going to give the two albums I have a few more spins before diving into "English Settlement" and "Skylarking."
