Looking for some deeper discussion of Through the Desert and found this gem. First, it’s amazing as a time capsule. It has all the production values of public access television, and Knizia literally calls in for his interview and briefly talks about his upcoming Lord of the Rings game and whether it’ll be released before the movie.

A lot of great tidbits dropped, too. Knizia originally envisioned it as rich families dividing up some island, but the mechanics didn’t support that theme as development continued. Sometimes he designs first from mechanics, sometimes from theme and sometimes from cool pieces. It’s important to switch it up to keep the designs fresh. Just a lot of stuff I wouldn’t expect to hear from Knizia based on his reputation.

There’s a separate interview on Tigris and Euphrates where it’s clear that setting and theme matter to him. He refers to the families making their mark on history and how the lowest score is your score because a civilization needs balance to last.

Maybe I'm just a little depressed this morning, but this looks terrible.

While I am excited to see FURIOSA, I am hoping the final cut looks better. The trailer had a more CGI look to it than the original. I fear the inevitable “must be bigger/more rad” urge to one up a prior franchise might happen .

I remember being shocked at how much of Fury Road was NOT cg. Like you, I also expect that a later cut will look better. That's pretty common.

The 2015 movie had a ton of practical effects, location shoots, etc. It cost a mint, as I recall. I wonder if this one had a much smaller budget, and did less practical as a result.

I read that they attached relatively cheap cameras all over the vehicles so they’d get good b roll footage when they crashed.

“ Canon 5D Mark IIs with the Technicolor CineStyle profile were used as crash cams. Sky replacement had to be executed on many of the 5D shots to remove banding, presumably caused by the small colour space.
Olympus and Nikon DSLRs were used a little as well.”
