For the new Core Set, Wizards had a bunch of game designers, most of video games (so I don't recognize many of the names myself, honestly) guest-design a card; some are board-game designers, too, like David Sirlin, Justin "Ascension" Gary, James "Cheapass" Ernest, maybe more. Here are all the cards they designed:

Personally, I'm not a fan of the "designed by" flavor text, I think it looks tacky...but those are some neat cards! As much as I dislike Sirlin's games, the sphinx he designed is fantastic!

Pretty cool. I was surprised to see one from Notch, as well as one from one of the Super Meatboy guys.

Link in your post is broken for me, but I have one that works linked here .

..that's an old link. Can you use the URL tag on the link to make it work? I think the board software truncates after a certain number of characters.

Sirlin's and Ernest's cards are awesome. I'm a big fan of the freedom WotC has given design teams with the yearly core sets. Some very cool cards have come out that otherwise might have had to be reworked to fit a block or shelved for years until it made sense.

I think James Ernest did enough mushrooms in his youth that they won't taper off until a decade or more after his death. Hot Soup is a positively inspired idea for a card.

Sirlin's card is the epitome of Sirlin.

For the Sphinx, why wouldn't I always guess "greater than"? Because them getting a cheap card free when I'm wrong seems naturally better to me than guessing lower and they get an expensive card free.

But isn't being RIGHT and them getting *no* free card best of all? :-) Four is also still a lot of mana to save!

Sirlin I'm sure sees it as a head game, the rest of us see it as risk tolerance. You guess high to minimize risk if that's your thing, likely more driven by who's winning than anything else.

Its a guess either way. Unless I know that they only have low cards I would never guess low. That's probably just me though.

Sirlin's card is great, but that's a lot of commitment for Blue--they should be winning if they have the nuts to poop out a {3}{U}{U} 4/4 flyer. Seems like a "Win More" card to me.

The ones I am really most impressed by are Warden of the Beyond, a 2/2 for {2}{W} that becomes a 4/4 if the opponent owns an exiled card--that is fucking synergistic right there. And Yisan, the legendary 2/3 for {2}{G} that let's you "verse" out bigger and bigger creatures for {2}{G} each turn. That needs to be dealt with right away.

Yeah, in terms of power level, the bigger problem with the Sphinx is that you need to be hitting your opponent with it to trigger its ability, and you don't need very many 4-damage hits to win the game anyway, free card be damned. But the design is still very neat, maybe even the coolest sphinx design yet. It's *not* just a 50/50 guess, MadDog, that's what's fun about it. If there were no mind-games then yes, it would be obvious and boring.

I LOOOOOOVE cards like Yisan (e.g. Birthing Pod & Hibernation's End). Green repeatable creature-tutors that make you do some mana-cost gymnastics in your deck are among my very favorite cards of all time.

Hot Soup is the silliest card they've done in a decade, it's unbelievable! I love the guy who drops land-mines, too. But I'm going to stop my Magic-gushing now, 'cause god knows that could and does go on forever.

What I like about the Sphinx is:

You could be tapped out of all lands and still play cards

You have no lands of one color and still play cards

You can splash a random color

There are a lot of UUU, RRR, BBB, WWW, GGG cards that are under four converted mana cost but very powerful

Seems like it would fit in great for EDH/Commander.
