Thoughts on SW: Legions?

Michael Barnes wrote: I’ll be reviewing it at Miniature Market, but I don’t see it going very far.

The problem for me, aside from the pretty meh rules that I’ve seen so far, is terrain. SW doesn’t really work with all of my Grimdark/Mortal Realms stuff. And I am not looking to invest in or expand into a new terrain collection that will reflexively not work with 40k/AOS.

Sure, you can use whatever. But it’s Star Wars, and it it doesn’t look like Hoth/Endor/Tatooine/Crait/whatever then I’m not as interested.

There is also the whole “do I really want to get into this when I have 7 40k armies” thing.

And now that I’m more into the modeling, I’m also not as interested in the one piece gum ball machine figures.

All that said, if this was prepainted and they were doing terrain pieces, I’d be much more enthusiastic about it.

Really don’t think it’s going to draw either the X-Wing or 40k crowd in for similar reasons. Will probably be slightly more popular than the Runewars miniatures game.

You should let me review it then.

Hmm. Maybe. I mean, I do want to take a look at it, but I wouldn’t be too upset about passing the buck on it. Let me think about that, if others are getting it I want us to do a H2H/multi-review on it, really.

If not SW, then definitely the new Modiphius Fallout. I have the terrain for both.

Very different aesthetic, that's for sure.

So I did a bit of digging out of fairness and to not just snub a product prejudicially.

It seems this product does follow some of the upgrade precedence as seen in X-Wing (upgrades in blisters differing from those in the core).

I want to say that's not a big deal, but doing such smacks of blatant cash grab.

If I were to buy two legion cores in order to field their recommended minimum of 800 points (each comes with 400), then there is a distinct disadvantage in upgrade variety.

Or maybe I only want to play empire, and don't want to Shell out for another core and instead just buy the small squad packs? Then I am at the same disadvantage, because the cores come with differing upgrades.

That has turned into a bit of a turn off.

If I ever do buy these models, it likely won't be to play the game FFG designed. Too much proprietary dice and upgrade stuff that is their hallmark which I feel to be tiring. But the differing content in like product ensures I stay away from their design. X-wing was a lesson that I didn't enjoy.

Bell of Lost Souls has basically become a marketing site for SWL...it’s shameful.

I think the new models are pretty tight, after seeing them in hand.

I'm not a star wars fanboy, yet growing up with star wars toys inclines me towards them more than a lot of other sci-fi models.

I kind of hope I never find a good skirmish game design that would be a seamless fit. Because then I'd be doomed. Heroscape starwars wouldn't be good since accomodations for bases larger than two hexes isn't really on par with the design engine.
Song of Blades and Heroes sci fi analogue could work, but only so much.
I'm kind of glad I'm ignorant of a lot of skirmish game designs. I'd likely buy these stupid models since the quality and price is competitive to anything gw produces.

BoLS?
Can someone summarize the link? I'd rather not pick up a virus or crash my phone...

I had the same difficulty. Fuck that site.

Cliff notes:

BoLS Shill: "Zomg you guys! Legion is so cheap! But dis shit naow!"

Christian Peterson: "Excellent, Smithers..."

Yeah, reading that detailed breakdown of how “cheap” it is to get into SWL along with the other obviously paid hype prices pretty much signaled the end of my interest in Legion. FFG/Asmodee tried to this somewhat with Runewars at BOLS, but this is like even more forced and obvious.

Pete is getting the MM review copy.

But it's kind of understandable though. I mean, look at the size of that AT-ST. That's $50. And it's taller then the Imperial Knight Warden next to it, which is $157. Sure, the Knight is way cooler with TONS of options and better details. But still, at less than third the Knight's price??

So, no one has talked about this for a month, and it dropped this week.

Is anyone getting in on this? Anyone played it recently? Is there a compelling reason to play it over the other FFG SW titles or GW/PP stuff? Was blacklisting Michael Barnes Christian Petersen's worst business move of all time?

They struck plastic gold with X-Wing, and sometimes it seems like their CEO and upper guys just try random things to see if they work, to try to get some of that GW or kickstarter money.
