He just approached me in a parking lot asking for gas money for a car that was "over there".

It's most likely not me. Emails that spoof someone generally come from other people's address books. I've been offline since Wednesday, but I'll have a look.

Yeah, that's the machine-generated stuff that usually comes from someone's address book being hacked. My account shows no logins that weren't me, but I changed passwords anyway. Now I need to update it on the seven or eight devices I use to pick up email from that address.

On a related note, about 4 weeks ago, I got maybe 500 emails 'returned' to me from addresses I never sent emails to. This continued for about 3 days and then stopped. I deleted maybe 800 emails in total.

After judicious research, it turns out that there is nothing you can do about this kind of thing. It usually is not your account security that is the problem, but companies selling your email address to others for commercial benefit. Solution is to delete the returned emails and sit tight.

There’s a decent chance the virus/hack is on your end Thirsty. That’s usually what this is. They go into names you would trust and send you an email « from » there instead of a Nigerian prince

Nah, I checked with a cyber security guy I know.

It happens on the odd occasion (once in 20 years for me). Nothing you can do until it burns itself out.

It all depends what you got hit by.
Our organization was hit mid-year (no training IT security training for users, we're govt and have pretty pathetic managers, and some clicked a phishing email that came in) and their account was used for sending out dozens (luckily not hundreds) of emails to people from their address books - we know this from teh header info in the emails received by the recipients and by checking our email gateway traffic.
