Empire of the Petal Throne

While I was a small schoolboy I looked at Empire of the Petal Throne in a games store in Londinium and I lusted. It was 1976 and the world was simpler but this was expensive (relatively speaking) so I passed. Eventually bought AD&D and it disappeared from my memory.

Back to today when mindlessly browsing, as one does, I come across one Tina's Games, a company set up to flog all related pdfs for Tekumel (the world of EotPT).

My question is this. How does it compare to AD&D? Was it a waste of money, for those that bought it, or did it just act as an adjunct to AD&D? Anyone still use it as a system?

Ultimately, is it just a nostalgia thing or did it have something going for it?

I used to have some PDFs somewhere for it (I will see if i still have them when im back in UK and send em over). It is a very interesting setting, from memory the system is much like basic or early ADnD (and most rpgs of that era). Its very dark fantasy and the creator made a series of megadungeons for it that i do not think where ever released. These days its more of a forum legend/collectors piece by most accounts rather than something that gets played.

Before Tekumel, we didn't have any idea of what a cohesive campaign was. To me, d&d will always be greyhawk. But there were always shades of the tsolyani empire that influenced our games from then on.

You could write it off as just nostalgia, but if you're 45 or older and played a lot, it had a strong influence on RPGs as we know them today.

They are good reading if nothing else. They carried a lot of great cross genre ideas in them.

Replied by Chapel on topic Empire of the Petal Throne
I usually compare and contrast Petal Trone, D&D and Harn. They are a three headed beast of the same experience. D&D had the easiest most accessible rules, then the complexity rose to Petal Throne and into Harn being the most complex. Subject wise was even three differing experiences yet kind of the same. D&D of course was most Tolkienesque. Harn was more based in Realism, which always felt closer to an Arthurian legend. Petal Throne stood alone with an atypical setting that took mythology from everything else that wasn't European. Tekumel of course was a setting for D&D, but when I think D&D, really Geyhawk meant D&D.

Petal Throne seemed to be the most about setting. It felt more like a story that you could interject a couple characters with some RPG rules to enjoy the ride. There wasn't a lot of wiggle room to deviate from the story. But it had a great story.

Where is Chivalry & Sorcery placed in this RPG rules difficulty scale?

I bought it when it first came out and, as I recall, it had a really extensive character builder along the lines of Traveller. I can only remember vaguely because I don't have it anymore.

If you haven't read them I did like the fiction books, Man of Gold and Flamesong.
