What's The Current Nintendo DS Situation?

The boy's 3DS is going out and there's a new pokemon title upcoming he wants.

Does Nintendo still make 3DS or is development moving all over to the Switch? I thought I saw some large screen 2DS recently at Target. Do those play 3DS games?

DS is still a thing. 2DS plays 3DS, no problems (just no 3D). We switched to 2DS because they are way more rugged. SAMUS RETURNS just got published, and the back catalog is insanely great.

The new Pokemon is going to the Switch. Not sure if there will be a 3DS version. Now that we have a switch, I can't imagine spending time on the 3DS, really.

pokemon ultra moon/sun is coming out for the switch? I thought it was 3DS only...but will play on 2DS?

What about these games I see that say 'Only for Nintendo NEW 3DS!"....will they play on a 2DS?

The 3DS has always had the ability to turn off the 3D feature right? I can't see there being any games that HAVE to have 3D in order to play. Right?

2DS can play ANYTHING that says 3DS, new or otherwise. I don't know if the Switch Pokemon game is the same one as the moon/sun games.

No, no, he's got a point about NEW 3DS. That is a juiced machine, but very little is exclusive (XENOBLADE CHRONICLES 3D). 2DS and 3DS are still in production, and Nintendo would be colossally fucking up by not having POKEMON on those platforms. Another caveat I read up on is that SNES titles in the Virtual Console are New 3DS only, if that matters.

Pretty sure the single panel is the regular 2ds. The new 2ds is a clamshell. Whether there was a 2DS clamshell previously, I dunno. Like said above, Nintendo naming conventions are terrible.

This is not true; the new Pokemon (Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon) is coming to the 3DS (and 2DS) *only*, not the Switch. People have speculated on some future Pokemon game going to the Switch, but Nintendo hasn't said a word about that.

Since I sold off a bunch of stuff, I used the money to purchase a New 3DS XL. I picked up a refurbished one last night, along with Super Mario 3D Land and Pokemon Sun. Really enjoying it so far. I traded in my DS Lite years ago, and it's one of the rare moments when I really regret letting go of old posessions. I had a lot of games for that thing too, I just wasn't thinking about what I'd want in the future.

I'm getting more money from sales next week. I'm thinking of picking up Link Between Worlds, Samus Returns, and Mario Kart. It's good to be able to take Nintendo with me again.
