The Dice Tower on Wikipedia!

As you know, I recently awarded Tom Vasel the Platinum Pawn Award for 2007 Game Reviewer of the year. However, I did not realize there was a campaign underway to get "The Dice Tower" removed from the Wikipedia. You see, to be listed in Wikipedia one of the notability requirements is to "win a well known and independent award"

Some guy cites his recent win of The Platinum Pawn as meeting this requirement. Granted, he is correct, the Platinum Pawn Awards are the most prestigious awards in boardgaming but I am feeling a little guilty.

I think I will put my name on my own Arch-Enemies list! HAHA

Check out the link here:(Read the last entry)

Wow...what's really more significant is that if you look through the editors' comments, you really see how the Dice Tower and more significantly That Other Board Game Site is viewed from the outside the hobby community. Example:

"From looking around Boardgame Geek I don't see anything more than a community site. On this article's references from this site (refs 3 and 6) these are forum pages. Due to the inherent unreliable nature of user-generated content, this would not pass as a respected medium."

"There is absolutely nothing in the podcast that would establish its notability."

But that's awesome...they give The Platinum Pawn more authority than BGG!

Since when do you have to win an award to be featured on Wikipedia, though? I don't think "Bukkake" has won any major awards, but ho ho ho, what is this, a Wiki page?

(Not that I have that bookmarked or anything.)

You do not have to win an award but it is one of the requirements to establish notarity. As Barnes, points out the fact that you are discussed on BGG doesn't mean squat. If it did you could find "Clearclaw" in Wikipedia.

You could also get listed in Wikipedia if you were published multiple times in publications. "The Dice Tower" appeared in one issue of "Knucklebones" but as someone pointed out it must be MULTIPLE TIMES.

The fact that Tom received an award from an independent organization like mine, which is truly independent, could get him listed. We shall see.

If the article's kept, I'll be sure to rally the mob, the pitchforks, and the torches for the inevitable hunting you down... =o)

And it's wikipedia, not Encyclopedia Brittanica, which has at least a higher reputation.

I think those encyclopedias you get at the grocery have a higher reputation than Wikipedia...

Does wikipedia mention some on the dice tower rate games before even playing them? Yes, I listen.

I can't bash the wiki. I rely on it too much to find out whats what (like what is bukkake.....damn, I really DIDN'T to know that). As an amatuer group effort, it's surprising how good the info actually is, when one considers it could (and in some places does) suffer from some of the same abuses found on BGG; namely, ending up being an advertisement or propaganda for whatever the entry is about. If the anal nerds want to discuss that shit, I say let them, if in the end the site is better off. Better to have some standards that are written and CAN be argued than some arbitrary admin playing god and banning/censoring things/people at a whim.
