Best New-To-You Games 2016?

I feel like we usually have people's Game/Movie/Stuff of the Year going by now. What were some of the best new to you games this past year?

I'm not sure I actually played anything new this year. I did play and enjoy Broom Service, but I've played Witches Brew a bunch of times so it wasn't that new. I'm sure there's something I'm not thinking of.

Edit: I did play Bloody Inn and liked it but it was definitely a learning game. Would have to play again to see how much I like it

Some new-to-me highlights of 2016...

Omen: A Reign of War
Argent: The Consortium
Warhammer Quest Adventure Card Game
Pirate's Cove

I liked Omen enough that I'd call it my favorite of the year.

Wow, Pirates Cove! I actually played that this summer for the first time in many years. I still enjoy it as a light dice-chucker but definitely prefer Merchants & Marauders for my pirate fix.

I think it was a combination of mechanics I enjoy (double guessing and chucking dice) and having the right group for it. It's definitely not better than Merchants and Marauders, which is one of my favorite games. But it was the right game at the right time for me I guess. Really enjoyed it in that weight class.

Well, in the pirate theme...I've really enjoyed that copy of Black Fleet a mysterious F:AT benefactor sent me, I'd rate that as one of the better old but new to me games of the year for me.

I guess Age of Sigmar would fit that parameter too since it is a 2015 release.

New-to-Me that shook my table:
Forbidden Stars
Age of Conan[ and then with the Adventures in Hyboria expansion.
Eldritch Horror
Star Trek: Ascendancy

Honourable Mention (I'm terrible at making shortlists):
City of Remnants
Star Wars: Rebellion
World of Warcraft: The Boardgame

HeroQuest !

Yes, I finally got to it in 2016. Every other overlord game is already in the sell pile, save a few hidden-movement games (Whitechapel and old+new Fury of Dracula).
Now I'm keeping a watchful eye for more HQ stuff in trades, because this stuff costs too much to purchase outright.

I can't decide between Silver Tower and Zimby Mojo, because I haven't played enough of either. At the moment, I am more excited about Silver Tower, but I suspect that Zimby Mojo will prove to be the better game in the long run.

Cthulhu Wars. It's lean and mean with a smart use of euro elements (VP's to control game length and area control to generate resources) and each faction has interesting rule-breaking powers. It's great.

I bought 3 eurogames that got boring after 5 plays each and that's it. Everything else was expansion material. At least I'm playing my old shit, right? Man...

Love reading these threads, thank you.

Mine is Argent, probably. It is by some distance the best worker placement---works well with two players, too, which people underestimate. I think influence is a little overemphasized in the game is its only flaw I see.

Armada close second, I think.

Also, this was a legitimately great year for games for me. Played and bought almost no duds and played lots of 2 player games repeatedly. You guys?

I'd say it would have to be Dungeonquest for me.

I've played it before this year, but never to the degree seen in 2016. I think I have played this at least 50 times this year. Just finally clicked for me, and bought Pete's gently used copy so I could give my buddy his copy back.

I think it has to do with kids. Some games are fun, and teach some valuable lessons. I think games can be a valuable tool for this, while engaging in play.

Dungeonquest teaches:
You are not a special butterfly.
Laugh at your own bad luck while laughing at others.
A little bit can be better than a lotta bit.
A decent dungeon exploration (thieving) experience can be had in a tiny package.

[edit] I'm seeing a fair amount of actual new games mentioned here, so if they are to be included as well, then Dungeonquest could be kicked to the curb as the clear winner is Gorechosen. I could have saved a lot of time playing new games and only played this. It is, beyond any reasonable doubt, the best Ameritrash game of 2016.

One of the best and most understated things about DungeonQuest is that there are no bullshit scenarios or heroic quests. It is straight up about stealing money from a dragon.

Sekigahara
Warhammer Quest Card Game
Zimby Mojo

Those are the only three new things I played this year, I think.

Been a busy year starting a new job that requires a lot more out of me. I bought a bunch of the new hotness games but have yet to play most of them.

2 player small/fast games have been the all the rage for my wife and I this year.

Thunder and Lightning is the probable winner.
Battle Line/Schotten Totten in a very lose 2nd.
Tides of Madness has been getting a lot of play
7 wonders duel has been fun.
Bought Kingdom builder and 2 expansions for dirt cheap a few weeks ago and that has actually been a big hit. I always had an inkling it would be a game that would work out for us but bought into the negativity surrounding it. Turns out I should have gone for it earlier.
