Not everything needs to be hyper-detailed "hobby quality." Yeah, the minis from Heroquest, Siege of the Citadel and Space Crusade don't have a ton of detail and look cartoony, but they have character and I can actually tell WTF I'm looking at.
There's a vast, vast majority of miniatures games that do not fall into the categories of Chibi or Shiti. You're simply not looking in the right places, I suspect. Try going to Lead Adventures Forums and looking at some of the models there, and some of the game systems they're discussing. I keep saying Strange Aeons, but seriously, it's the best miniatures game ever made, IMHO. And if not THE BEST, then in the top 3, for sure.

The lowest level is the "buy". Generally this is when I buy stuff. Then a little higher is is passive enjoyment, such as watching movies and listening music. I put books in the active enjoyment, along with games and playing music (I play guitar & keyboard), because my imagination can be very active when reading a book. Then the highest level is when I create something. This include programming games, designing web, and making other stuff. The last one is substantially more rewarding than the others, even if it requires the most investment.
Miniature gaming, with all the painting, create your own list, is a nice bridge between the active enjoyment and creating something. It doesn't require the high commitment of actual creation process need, and also much more rewarding than active enjoyment activities.
Measuring tape still sucks though.

But the number one turn off for me is unpainted minis. I keep pretending that shuffling out to the shed and setting up a Little paint desk and giving it a go will be something relaxing and fun but the reality is I'm too tired, cant be arsed and dont want to waste the time, Money or effort realising that it still looked like shit, so I may as well have just played a game with pre painted minis or Proxy in DnD type minis that cost next to nothing and get the job done. I prefer to play stuff like Space Hulk with AT43 minis (and they fit better in Space Hulk!) than unpainted minis, no matter how nice they are.
