SW - The Queen's Gambit

My FLGS has one in stock.

Is it really such a good game?

Is it worth having to explain to everyone who sees me with it that although the film is crap, the game is actually quite good? I'm going to get pretty sick of the constant apologising for that cinematic abomination.

BUY IT.

It's excellent. Whatever your opinion of the movie is, the game is still excellent.

There are people who'd kill innocent pedestrians for a copy of that game.

It took me several months to hunt my copy down, and this was several years ago. It's easily one of my top 5 games.

If you don't like it, you'll have no trouble trading it, either here or at BGG.

Whoa...is it retail priced or "collector" priced?

If it's retail, buy now. Today. Go get it. This game will eventually be one of the big expensive ones because it will never be reprinted.

Is it good? Yes. It's very, very good. It's kind of a multiplexed Command and Colours game. The Episode I stuff, yeah, it sucks, but it's worth looking past because the game is extremely fun has huge amounts of conceptual theme.

You do get to massacre hordes of gungans, if that makes a difference to you.

how does it rate as a great game? Like paying some of the exorbitant prices you see in some stores and on-line.

I guess my question is how much do you think the game is worth?

I hear it's a 7.

Episode I might not have been the best movie, but the battles were pretty good, and the Darth Maul duel was awesome. Just seeing this pic makes me want to try the game very much, just not the $100+ kind of very much. (Not that the figures come painted.)

Here's the thing: Queen's Gambit isn't really that good. It's pretty mindless, and you'll usually know which side is going to win long before the game is over. You'll also end up playing pretty much the same way every time after the first few plays. If it wasn't for the license, I don't think there'd be much reason to play it more than once or twice.

That said, Barnes is right about the conceptual theme. This game is the final half-hour of Episode 1. They managed to jam the ground battle, the space battle, the lightsaber duel, and storming the palace into one single game without it feeling like just a mish-mash of different mechanics. Everything is woven together into a cohesive whole. It's big dumb kids game at the end of the day, but it's a perfect example of how good use of theme can make an otherwise forgettable game memorable.

I'd pass on it myself, but I've played it enough already, and I don't have much interest in owning it just for the sake of it. If I were you, though, I'd definitely give it a try if it's reasonably priced. You know damn well you'll be able to get your money back when you're done with it.

Well, I've just come back from lunch with the game in my hot little hands.

It has had the shrink wrap removed, but the contents are all still sealed and unpunched. Box is OK - a little scuffed in 1 corner and and a few small pressure indentations.

Not sure it is really my cup of tea - I can't get over how bad the film was.

I'm undecided whether to play this, or on-sell / trade it for something else.

Not to derail the thread or anything, but in which directions are you expanding? Or is that a NSFW question? ;)

From the mid-rift, to whatever direction I am facing.

It's a user name I pinched from the lyrics of a Steely Dan song.

That scuffed corner pretty much chews up its collector value. And if it's not your kind of game it's pointless to hold onto it so I'd suggest unloading that dud before your wife finds out. Only problem is I'm located in the antipodes (Australia). Shipping overseas to the States or Europe is a bugger cost wise.

I just had a peek at the contents - pretty sexy!! Lots of shiny bling. I have been wanting to try out a command and colours style game.

Thought I'd get in a show of interest as the first of the UK 'trashers.

If you've never played a C&C game before, try it out. I like all of the other C&C games better but you might as well try it since you bought it. I don't think you'll have any problems getting your money back out of it if you don't like it. There are plenty of people who will pay the foreign shipping for it.

Can't you just play it, then sell it? It's not like keeping the pieces in the baggies will increase its value significantly.
