Is there a agreed on term for 'these games of ours'? Meaning non-mainstream hobby style games that includes euro and Ameritrash and all flavors in-between?

Working on an interest survey for my library system and without making it too large I want a checkbox for games other than Chess/ checkers and clue/sorry. I feel like there should be some encompassing term I am missing.

This is what we currently have:
GAMES
0 Poker
0 Bridge
0 Solitaire
0 Chess
0 Checkers
0 Dominoes
0 Scrabble

0 Video
0 Puzzle

I just call them "modern board games".

I've used "hobby board games" and "designer board games"

I think "Hobby board games" is the best one. It's pretty broad, but somehow seems to convey non-MONOPOLY. What is "Puzzle" on your list? Puzzle game? Or jigsaws or what?

Yeah, "hobby board games" is the one I use the most. Anyone not in the hobby can probably parse out that you aren't talking about Sorry/Monopoly/etc and it doesn't sound too pretentious or nerdy.

I call them either "weird-ass boardgames" or "long-haired boardgames" depending on the audience.

I think the most common term is "designer boardgames" followed by "hobby games" and "boutique games".

I occasionally get non-gamers to play my games, in part because I simply refer to them as boardgames. Gale Force Nine games work well for this purpose, because they offer games based on well-known tv shows.

I have both secret sign and secret handshake to identify them.

No, just board games. Better board games, if necessary.

If you're including modern card games under that label, you may want to use "hobby games" rather than "hobby board games". Or maybe "hobby tabletop games"?
