I picked up a copy of Marvel Heroes for 25 bucks. Doesn’t seem to get very good reviews but it seems a few folks around here like it well enough. Is this thing gonna be hitting eBay after one play?

You talking about the Legendary card game? Or the UDE VS. System thing?
If it's legendary - It's a deck builder with a couple of tweaks. It's a weird competetive co-op where you either all lose, or you all win but someone wins most. I hate those kind of games. Probably is better solo.
The UDE VS system thing? haven't played it - Was balls deep on the Vs System back in the day when there was a competetive scene and money tournaments - I still consider it the best complete CCG experience - It was a great game, in design and play and it had compelling limited play. However, I looked over the tweaks they made to the system for the new game and though the cards look the same and the numbers on the cards are mostly the same, it makes it a completely different game. I don't think any of it improved the game at all.

No, it’s the big box FFG thing from like 10 years ago. Prepainted minis. Designed by the War of the Ring guys.

I was very tempted to pick this game up on a couple of occasions, but the length of the game and the depth of the rules suggested that it was almost never going to get on the table. If you have at least one friend who is in to Marvel Comics and board games, you can probably get this played some. The other big knock that I heard against this game is that the combat is basically Rock Paper Scissors.

It’s kind of a mess. In classic Nexus/Ares fashion, learning the game is tricky. It’s not really a hard game when you finally overcome the rule book, but it’s easy to mess up.
It’s a game with a few really cool ideas and if you asked me 10 years ago, I’d say those ideas were fun. The way threat is calculated and then other players can spend it to play villains cards was a big hit with me. I even kind of like the combat system. But those systems haven’t aged well, and to make matters worse, they might be too clever in that they actually hinder the game as a whole. It’s Marvel superheroes. Some cool thematic powers and some simple dice rolls would have sufficed, but instead what you have is the work of a design team who felt compelled to reinvent the wheel just for the sake of doing it (true of many games of its era, especially FFG). And IP is wasted on it. We all love Marvel for their characters and stories. This game has neither narrative or the touches that make you say, “Yeah, this feels like Spider-Man/The Thing/whoever!”
There is a good game in there somewhere, but that game would have to have most of what’s there now gutted.. It’s not really a bad game either, rather just a disappointing *Marvel* game.
