This has been teased for a while, so it may have been out for a while, but I was wondering whether anyone else had seen it. This is presented as "fun" and "being fun," but I'm not sure whether anyone but the filmmakers--and maybe the box cover artist--were having any fun at all. Seems more than a bit about "Can we guess what's in the boss's mind at any given point?" and "To the extent we guess right, we're doing it right." I particularly felt for the (I think) creative director who felt compelled to go back through all his old work to convince himself that he was capable of doing a good job. Anyway, the vid's pretty well put together, and while I won't say that I think it's a great direction to mingle reviews and "insider"/"access" pieces (and I realize it was unauthorized/uncompensated), it's a nice piece--but not, for me, "fun."

I enjoyed it well enough. Some really interesting bits including the history of TI/FFG. I find it odd that so little of it is focused on gameplay/game design though.

Interesting. Yeah, in retrospect, it was largely about components and funding, though these obviously had not-insignificant impact on design of the various editions.

And I guess it shouldn't really be any surprise, but it still struck me how very male this all was.

It's been up or a few days. I really enjoyed it, and it was made well enough to feel shorter than the almost 50 minutes it is. Agreeing with Charles, I would have liked to know more about the history of the game - but for that, you probably would have needed a lot more time and trust to do more private conversations with Mr. Petersen about his childhood, so Matt Lees had to go with what he got.
Didn't care at all for the turtles/sex angle and the number crunching, but some interesting stuff was there.
Yes, it is a very male game. Something about shoving around plastic toys and making pew pew noises, I guess. The one time I convinced my wife and a friend of hers to join us, after an hour they looked at each other and one of them said: "this is exactly like being at work."

What a waste of effort. It simply was not interesting or compelling beyond "hey somebody made a documentary about a hobby board game". There is virtually no sense of voice or perspective beyond fannish appreciation, which makes the whole thing read like a 45 minute commercial for the game. It seriously felt like watching a subtle sales pitch. I'm not saying that it has to be a dirt-digging exercise...but let's face it, this is not the making of "Exile on Main Street".

I like Shut up and Sit Down a lot more than most people here, I think... but I like Quinns and the dude who is now in Canada a lot more than Matt Lees, I think this documentary is mainly Matt Lees? I could be wrong.

I quite like much of their work, and their half-hourish TI3 play summary/art piece is, for me, one of the best game-related videos I've seen. And their video reviews (and probably the print ones too) tend to have more insight and specificity than many others. I suppose that's part of the point for me. Do I care about a TI4 review from them after this?

I thought it was a bloody interesting watch (and hardly ever watch shit like this or listen to podcasts) for a boardgame video - come on, it's about a boardgame so how x-factor do you think it could be - get in the real world guys. It's there about how TI4 coming into existence, not a review of the history of the TI universe so you get what you get.
Sometimes I think there's still some pretty silly anti-FFG sentiment floating around here - for a guy in a tiny failing comic company to start with a boardgame idea and then get to here in 20 years is a pretty good effort when you compare against the GW behemoth.
