I really have more games than I can play, but a friend wants to buy me a game in the $40 range for my birthday. I'm thinking something I might be able to play with my three teens and wife. Leading candidates so far are:

Downforce: it's at Barnes and Noble and Amazon, and we have enjoyed Daytona 500 and Detroit Gran Prix for years.

Citadels, fancy version: We have been playing the standard version lately and everyone seems to like it. the new version has 27 profiles!

Trains: Rising Sun: It's like Dominion, which my daughter likes, but it's also a train game! Even Cfarrell likes it, when combined with cards from the original trains

The Shab-Al-Hiri Roach. I saw this at a local shop. It probably sucks, but I like the premise of academics at a party swallowing mind controlling roaches from another planet.

Dominion: My daughter enjoyed playing it with friends. I owned it a long time ago.

This is a lame post. But maybe there's something amazing out there I haven't considered.

Automobiles is great and light. Gang Rush: Breakout is bad ass too.

The Shab-Al-Hiri Roach is actually good, but it's an old indie story RPG.

I recently got back into Dominion. It's aged like fine wine. I think it's still probably the best pure deck builder. A very fine-tuned machine.

I just kind of like the artifact value of this game; I'd probably never play it. There aren't a lot of RPGs with academics as their core premise.

I would choose Downforce out of all of that. Dominion will just lead you down to expansion hell. Citadels needs 4-5 to get going. Trains is decent but I'd get Dominion over it. No idea on the roach game but it sounds like it requires drugs.

Shab-al-Hiri Roach is amazing but you need a group that is all on the same page. It's a great satire of petty academic infighting and a good game on top of it.

Ha ha. I have five people in my family who are living at home, and we just knocked out a pretty fun three-player game. The appeal of Trains is that my daughters love all things Japan. I'll see if my buddy picks up Downforce. I sent him a list of like eight possible games or books. I enjoyed making that list. The roach game is pretty tempting, but it's only $15 on Amazon so I could pick it up any time. I just need to find enough academic RPG-ers to play it.

If I had to choose between Dominion and Trains, I'd pick Automobiles.

You may like Salvation Road for that money if you want a co-op. Really remarkable game. Same with Hit Z Road which is light and very fun.

I am a big fan of Trains/ Rising Sun. We played it just last night with three. I like the way the board adds a whole new element of blocking and point stealing to the deck building that is lacking in Dominion. Rising Sun is cool cause you get the two player maps and the routes, which adds to more interaction.
